Yoga Nidra and Nidra Yoga – What are they?

Yoga Nidra, Surya Namaskar, Asana and Pranayama are comprehensively described by Satyananda/Bihar Yoga

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra Meditation is paradoxical to explain because your thinking mind sees its description of being awake while asleep as contradictory. The experience itself is self-explanatory once explored as the contradiction is resolved when you see that it is your thinking mind that relaxes while you remain alert and awake as your native intelligence [some folks call your native intelligence your other than conscious mind, your subconscious mind, your super-conscious mind, and similar names].

The practice is the process of allowing your conscious/thinking mind to relax as it does in Deep Sleep with the distinction that you as a mentally active doer is absent and you as your natural being is present as that which is aware – and that which is aware is Awareness. In this way Yoga Nidra practice is a means to access and abide as your natural Awareness knowingly.

Your mind is an excellent servant and a poor master…

The other self-evident factor of Yoga Nidra practice is that when your thinking mind relaxes you do not lose consciousness as Awareness of sensations and the unfolding of life continues. In other words Awareness is its own knowing and the obvious thing that is absent in this process is the mental noise of your thinking mind as its ongoing chatter.

In this light Yoga Nidra is a meditative practice that facilitates yogic union with Awareness as your native intelligence by allowing your thinking mind to relax[in a certain way it is absorbed or enfolded into your deeper intelligence such that it is no so much absent as silently resting and available to be used as an instrument of your deeper intelligence].

Seeing is Doing

Hopefully you now see that Yoga Nidra does not negate the use of your thinking mind. Its role in the practice is twofold as follows:

  1. it is used prior to the practice to study and understand the process by reviewing information like this article and setting your Resolution and Resolve as directed [these are explained in other materials like 'The Creation Vibration' which is available at http://nidrayoga.com]
  2. and although it silently rests during the practice it is available to be used by Awareness [for example, if an alarm sounds while you are practicing, your thinking mind would be activated by Awareness to use memory of what to do in this situation to ensure your self-preservation and that of your family, etc].

Lastly, you act based on your Awareness. This Truth is consistent for all beings across all states of consciousness. Awareness means seeing in the most comprehensive sense of the word and this can be simply stated as: Seeing is Doing. The proof of this is experientially self-evident which means that you are not being asked to believe anything or to take a leap of faith. It is this active attribute of Awareness that accounts for the acting in all authentic meditation and Yoga Nidra.

What is Yoga Nidra

The best way to understand what Yoga Nidra is to understand who is practicing it.

The one who practices Yoga Nidra is a yogi and the clearest definition of what a yogi is comes from the Bagavad Gita 4:18 as follows: “One who sees inaction in action, and action in inaction, is intelligent among men, he is a yogi  and has accomplished everything (he is in the transcendental position although engaged in all sorts of activities).”

This definition evokes the obvious questions, “What does inaction in action and action in inaction mean?”

Inaction in action and action in inaction means that your very being is doing . For example in deep sleep you are not consciously active yet there is no discontinuity to life.

The practice of Yoga Nidra approximates deep sleep. In the practice ‘you’ are inactive yet you are awake, alert and active as your true nature – thus you experientially understand ‘inaction in action’, ‘action in inaction’ and you also then know what it means to be a yogi who has accomplished everything.

In this light Yoga Nidra is the practice of inaction is action and action in inaction.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is a blend of deep sleep, self-hypnosis and profound relaxation. What makes Yoga Nidra distinct is that although you appear to be doing noting there is action involved.

This paradox of appearing to do nothing yet being active evokes the question ‘how is this so?’

Like all yoga practice and life itself the answer to that question is experiential. And in this case the experience is the understanding of your true nature.

What is your true nature? Why has every sage in some way or another directed you to ‘Know Thyself’?

Again the answer to these questions is experiential as to know yourself is to be aware. This is self-evident once seen and what sees this is awareness.

In the light of understanding your true nature as awareness the Yoga Nidra paradox of being active while appearing to do nothing is also resolved because Awareness is active. In short Awareness acts and its action arises simultaneously with its seeeing as awareness; in other words seeing is doing.

Still another way that this can be stated is that your true nature is mind with the experiential understanding that mind really means ‘minding’ wherein there is the activity of being aware and the simultaneous action that arises with it.

In this light your are mind or Awareness as the openness where everything is seen and what is seen is the content as your experience of life. And like breathing and all other things in the universe ‘minding’ is fourfold as four degrees or wave levels that correspond to your four brainwave patterns.

The awesome power of this understanding is that by being what you already are, which means awareness, you can remain alert through all four degrees of your mental activity and because you are aware you can command energy to take form by using the principle of ‘energy follows awareness’ and what is called the ‘Law of Attraction’.

Yoga Nidra and Your Brainwaves

Yoga Nidra takes you through all four of your natural brainwave patterns as you explore this process of deep yoga relaxation that approximates deep sleep.

Yoga Nidra not only approximates deep sleep it guides you along the same brainwave pathway that happens when you go from your waking state of beta brainwaves, then fall through the reverie of alpha brainwaves and stabilize into the delta brainwave pattern of deep sleep.

Although a session of yoga nidra may be just 30 minutes or so it provides the deep rest, restoration and other widespread health and wellness benefits associated with deep sleep because you brain actually naturally drops into this deepest brainwave pattern in the early stages of entering the sleep state. In some sessions your brainwave activity may actually increase from the slowest delta range to the rem stage associated with dreaming.

Brainwaves

In all cases the four brainwave patterns are available to you together with the four states of consciousness associated with them and your four brainwave patterns may be likened to the four states of matter. For example you know that water can be solid as ice, liquid as liquid water, gas as water vapor and in the plasma state as ionized water and that the distinction of each state or stage is dependent on the rate of vibration. In the same way the distinction in your brainwave activity and the corresponding stage of consciousness is directly related to the vibratory rate of your brain’s activity.

In this light the extraordinary impact of Yoga Nidra is that in addition to all of the health, wealth and creative benefits it provides it is also a means for you to explore these distinct stages of consciousness knowingly. In other words what makes Yoga Nidra so powerful is that although it approximates deep sleep, it is not deep sleep, because in the practice you develop the ability to remain being aware through all four brainwave patterns which means that the power of all four stages of consciousness are then available to you.
